The NCS Community
For those without a support system, NCS provides not just a home but a community where everyone belongs.
When Norka Needed Community
After aging out of foster care, Norka found a home at Louis Nine House (LNH), where she worked through some of the trauma she experienced at a young age.
Norka thrived as she was able to socialize with her neighbors and express herself through art, including painting, jewelry making, creating floral arrangements, and even helping the staff decorate for the holidays.
Last fall, Norka’s life changed instantly when she suffered a stroke.
When she was released from the hospital, Norka didn’t just return to a building… she returned to a community.
Norka’s Louis Nine House community checked on her frequently as she relearned how to walk and talk. They brought her coloring books, novels, and crafts she could do in her apartment to help keep her creative side active and her mind engaged.
And she was consistently uplifted by their cards filled with encouraging words—simple gestures that Norka credits for helping her feel stronger and recover more quickly. First using a walker and then a cane, she started to get out of her apartment and visit neighbors and staff.
“I was worried I wouldn’t be able to walk again, but they helped me have faith and cheered me on as I did PT exercises.”
Today, Norka has fully regained her ability to walk and speak—and she’s making plans to lead art classes for other residents. “I want to give back and teach my neighbors something I am passionate about. I love art and it has helped me so much,” she said.
