Residential Programs
Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter operates three residential programs that pair affordable housing with comprehensive on-site supportive services. Linking housing with services is an evidence-based approach that has been shown to be effective in improving housing stability, especially for chronically homeless individuals, as well as employment status, and mental and physical health.
This combination has also been proven to be cost effective, as it reduces utilization of emergency rooms, hospitals, shelters, psychiatric facilities, and prisons.
NCS operates the following residential facilities:
The NCS Residence
The NCS Residence, a long-term, supportive housing facility on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, houses 65 New Yorkers facing homelessness, the majority of whom are mentally ill and have experienced chronic homelessness.
Louis Nine House
Louis Nine House, located in the Bronx, has 46 studio apartments for young adults who are homeless or have aged out of foster care.
NCS Scholars
NCS Scholars provides year-round housing and supportive services to unhoused college students, addressing not only homelessness but also the challenges that typically cause or accompany it.
Nonresidential Programs
In addition to supportive housing, NCS offers a range of programs that assist individuals on the path to independent living through counseling and treatment, educational and vocational services, job placement, and crisis intervention. NCS’s more than 40 years of experience helps us to better understand the root causes of homelessness, improve service delivery, and advance our mission to transform lives.
Chance for Change
Chance for Change is uniquely designed to serve individuals who are homeless and battling substance use disorders. The program also helps participants manage other life areas such as mental illness, chronic medical conditions, homelessness, unemployment and other life stressors.
Chance to Connect
Chance to Connect provides resources, information, and referrals to New Yorkers at a resource center, community meals, and throughout the City.
Options
Options is NCS’s vocational, education and employment program that helps individuals with little or no employment history and significant barriers to employment identify and pursue a career track that can provide a living wage and growth over time.
