Coping Mechanisms During Another COVID Wave
Ronald, one of the 65 tenants at the NCS Residence, is known for his smile, upbeat personality, and love of connecting with others.
Prior to the pandemic, he was always one of the first to arrive for social events at the Residence. However, while Ron thrives on community, he also quickly recognized the importance of social distancing and putting his health first. During the recent COVID surge, Ron has been challenged to balance his need to stay safe with his need for a social outlet.
Fortunately, Ron found resources to help him when he is having difficulty with social distancing. He often turns to Robert Yancey, NCS’s Chief Program Officer, whom Ron describes as a “pillar in my orbit” and an “advocate that I can depend on.”
Some of Ron’s favorite ways to center himself include meditating in the Residence’s 7th floor garden when it’s nice out and reading books. A particular favorite of his is “One Prayer at a Time,” an anthology of prayers connected to each of the 12 steps of recovery.
Ron has also used this time to pursue his other passion, writing. He is taking advantage of how much time he has alone now and is writing more than ever to finish his novel. “Broken Men and The Word Became Flesh” has been a labor of love for Ronald. He has proudly read a chapter of the book at the holiday talent show each year. “It’s about addiction, romance, homelessness, and the impact literature can have on one’s life. It’s part autobiographical,” Ronald said with a smile.
Ron is looking forward to when he can spend more time in social environments, but for now, he is grateful for the outlet literature provides. “I’ve been so happy all these years at NCS,” Ron shared. “I’ve been here about 30 years, and I am so thankful to have a place to live and access to all of the resources NCS offers.”
